Guide to Streatham Festival 2013

The Streatham Festival returns for its 12th year with the theme of ‘The Glamour Days’, celebrating a rich heritage of people, architecture arts and culture.

Treats in store include a vintage feast of performance, workshops, dancing and delicious food for all the family at Streatham UnCommon, and a host of free musical delights as part of the new flagship event, Streatham Strut. Swing your stuff at the South London Blitz Party, samba the streets at Lane and Vale Carnival and rediscover a little piece of local history at the Rookery Centenary Celebrations.

Taking place between Thursday 11th July to Sunday 14th July, here are some of the top picks from the official Streatham Festival committee:

Shiroma Ratne
Thurs to Sunday
Artist Shiroma Ratne has created an installation that will consist of period furniture, garments & memorabilia, giving the audience a taste of a bygone era. The installation is a makeover stage scene from the play “Look Back In Anger” by John Oxborne which was performed in 1956 at the Streatham Hill Theatre.

Battle Of The Eyes
Thursday 11th, 7:30pm to 8:30pm
BOTE will be wearing head cameras feeding projections onto several screens, showcasing the artwork based around the interior and faded glamour of the Beacon Bingo hall in Streatham Hill.

The performance will last one hour and feature photographs by Mario Cavalli taken from behind the scenes of this important Streatham Hill landmark, with a suitably ambient soundtrack.

Lane & Vale Carnival
Parade 1 – Greyhound Lane to Streatham Vale, 10:30am to 11:30am
Parade 2 – Streatham Vale to Streatham Common, 12:00pm to 1:00pm
Festivities will start with a high energy carnival parade beginning outside the Waterfront Bar on Greyhound Lane at 10:30am. The parade will conclude by returning to the Common for the start of Streatham UnCommon at 1pm. Come along and see eye-catching floats, street performers, bands, music, and community groups from across Lambeth coming together to celebrate Streatham’s diversity.

The Rookery Centenary

Children enjoy playing the games children play, and especially in the Rookery Garden – a hundred years of hide and seek and other fun are still to be had! Come and enjoy musical creations too – Music Off Canvas has created special compositions for the day and will be exploring the Rookery with the help of local children. Expect community stalls with the Spice Tent installation and workshops to boot.

Streatham UnCommon
Saturday 13th, 1pm to 5:30pm
The Ragroof Theatre Players will be there with their ‘Glamour Days’ style show called Shall We Dance? Encore! taking the audience from a whirlwind journey from the Roaring Twenties to the Thrifty Fifties. Expect gorgeous gowns, great music and heart-warming stories of love and loss. Accompanying them will be the Wired Aerial Theatre!

Streatham Strut
Saturday 13th evening
New to 2013, a flagship event to celebrate the fantastic array of music on offer in Streatham. For one night only from Streatham Common to Streatham Hill, venues across SW16 will be alive to the latest sounds in jazz, rock, funk, blues, and much more. And entry is free!

South London Blitz Party
Saturday 13th, 7:30pm to 11pm
Swing Patrol love anything that swings and have local classes in Streatham. Come and take a lesson at the start of the night and then try your hand at some swing dancing or just enjoy the great music, the cool local hall and the spectacle of the experienced jitterbug kids. Dressing up is part of the fun!
