Beefing up home security in your house

Beefing up home security in your house

The police in Lambeth have been on a drive recently to clamp down on the number of home burglaries. Our Safer Neighbourhood Team recently came down my street to hand out some safety tips & instructions to help improve home security. By having improved home security this will deter burglars.

I thought the tips were pretty sensible and practical, so thought it would be good to share them with the wider Streatham community:

  • Ensure all your valuables are not easily seen through windows
  • If your property has a communal front door, two good locks on the front door are essential and locking them at all times is a must
  • Turn on any security lights you have and make sure they are in good working order
  • If you are going on holiday cancel all deliveries and ask a friend, neighbour or relative to check the property periodically. Make your home less likely to be targeted by using time switches on lights
  • Ensure all windows have secure locks and are kept locked shut when you are out. Also ensure your front door is locked shut and secure
  • If you have trees and bushes around your property make sure they are cut and trimmed for a clear view all round and to deter burglars hiding
  • Register your mobile phone, television and other household items free online at www.immobilise.com
  • If you decide on buying a new television, laptop etc. Do not advertise them to people by leaving boxes outside your address. Tear or fold these up so the picture cannot be seen
